Review Honey, I Shrunk The Kids [1989] / Walt Disney Home Video:A deft balance between special effects, comedy and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbour kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended) and entertaining outing. -Keith Simanton.

Review Baby Van Gogh - World of Colours / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child's curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you'll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we're taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh's era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works. On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There's also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. -Paul Tonks.

Review Teletubbies - Ready Steady Go! [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Taking full advantage of the magical sounds and soundtrack of the Teletubbies, Ready, Steady. Go! collects together lots of games of energetic fun, as the Tubbies dance and move and sing "Heads, shoulders, knees and toes" in a variety of places, and in different ways; Laa-Laa and Po are sleeping until they are woken up by a radio transmitter singing the song; they are all sitting to eat breakfast, when the song comes on and they all jump up to join in, while the Noo-noo looks on bemused. All the movement, follow-my-leader games, songs of body parts and the films of real-life children playing jumping games will particularly interest 14-month-olds to older toddlers, as they develop an awareness and delight in their own ability to move. The Teletubbies' colourful visuals, as well as intriguing sounds, such as the "parp" horn that sounds when a Tubby sits on its bottom, lots of real bunnies and the giggles of the Sun Baby that so delights babies, will make this video a hit with children aged between six months and about three years. -Alison Jardine.

Review Winnie The Pooh : Seasons Of Giving / Walt Disney Home Video:Three marvellous cold-weather stories from Disney's popular Pooh television series are combined into one video. A slight error in judgement has led the gang in the 100 Acre Wood into Spring in "Groundpiglet Day". Rabbit's rushing about defeats the true purpose of the holidays in "A Winnie the Pooh Thanksgiving". Rabbit is also the centre of "Find Her, Keep Her" when he adopts a wayward bird. Even though this is a new collection of cartoons, the 70-minute tape keeps close to the spirit of the 1960s Pooh classics (unlike previous Pooh cartoons). A new song from Disney songmasters the Sherman brothers is sung (along with their famous title number), and Paul Winchell returns as the unmistakable voice of Tigger. That's not the late Sterling Holloway voicing Pooh, but a remarkable impersonation by ace mimic Jim Cummings. (Ages 3 and up) -Doug Thomas, Amazon. com.

Review Noddy In Toyland - Noddy And Friends / 2 Entertain Video:Traditionalists were of course scandalised enough when the stop-motion animated Noddy TV series featured regional accents and (gasp) positive black characters. God only knows what they'll make of this. Try to keep up: what you have here is an Anglo-American co-production in which stories from the stop-motion series are sandwiched between frantic scenarios featuring live-action children and adult characters and puppets-a kind of Sesame Street in total overdrive. This, of course, seems hopelessly incongruous to everyone except the show's intended audience, which simply takes the whole thing in its stride. Individually, the two elements are commendable anyway; the first live-action episode-involving a parrot and an unstoppable vacuum cleaner-is a particularly fine piece of slapstick, while the original stop-motion stories are as gently rewarding as ever. This DVD is guaranteed to meet with approval from the jingly-hatted one's many young fans. -Roger Thomas.

Review Cool Runnings (1994) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:Based on an improbable but true story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. -Tom Keogh.

Review Teletubbies - What's That? [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Back again with their unfadingly popular show, the Teletubbies offer something slightly different in What's That?. A combination of the new, innovative "Teletubbies Everywhere" format and the more traditional Home Hill setting, there's something here for every Tubby fan. "Teletubbies Everywhere" are 10-minute shows, featuring Teletubbies shows from around the globe (in this instance, Finland, followed by Chile). They include real-life film clips, in which children speak their native tongue, un-dubbed. Though it may seem improbable at best, it was during this section only that the two-and-a-half-year-old reviewer of this video was truly enthralled. Following the two "Everywhere" clips is a Teletubbies 30-minute show back at Home Hill, containing the usual fun, frolics and "eh ohs" that toddlers love. This video, at 54-minutes long, is a novel variation on an old theme, and will probably keep the fans interested for a good while longer. -Lucie Naylor.

Review The Hunchback Of Notre Dame 2 - The Secret Of The Bell [2001] / Walt Disney Home Video:Most of the original characters-plus a few new ones-return in Hunchback Of Notre Dame II. Esmeralda (Demi Moore) and Phoebus (Kevin Kline) now have a son named Zephyr (Haley Joel Osment), with whom Quasi (Tom Hulce) has become friends. When the circus comes to town, the hunchback becomes enchanted by magician's assistant, Madellaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt), but the vain Sarousch (Michael McKean) is also a thief with an eye for the cathedral's jewelled bell. He forces Madellaine to woo Quasi while he carries out the theft. Will he get away with it? Will Madellaine learn to see the inner Quasi? And will Quasi be able to trust again when he learns of her deception? Songs and humorous hijinks from the gargoyles, such as Jason Alexander's Hugo, illustrate the lesson that-as in the first feature-you can't judge a book by its cover. This sequel is squarely aimed at a younger audience than the original, ages 5-10 should be very entertained. -Kathleen C. Fennessy, Amazon. com.

Review Bear In The Big Blue House - Potty Time With Bear [2001] / Uca Catalogue:Children can learn all about toilet training and other important issues with Channel 5's favourite seven-foot bear and his colourful muppet friends in Bear in the Big Blue House-Potty Time with Bear. Produced by the Jim Henson Company, this video contains two fun-packed 24-minute episodes aimed at two to five year olds. The first episode "When You've Got To Go" was originally broadcast on the Disney Channel in 1999 to rave reviews. It deals sensitively with the subject of toilet training, with Bear gently guiding his friends through all the fears raised by using the potty or toilet. Many topics are covered including good hygiene, respect for privacy, recognising the call of nature, accidents and the importance of seeing toilet use as a natural part of growing up. The second episode, "Call It a Day", slows everything down, emphasising the necessity of a good night's sleep. Bear is the perfect host throughout, drawing viewers into his world by sniffing up close to the camera and claiming he can smell his scrumptious young audience. He is kind, patient and gentle to his friends, making him an ideal carer and teacher. Upbeat songs reiterate the main themes. Many are funny and complement the two regular favourites "Welcome to the Blue House" and "The Goodbye Song". [+]
Fans and newcomers will be thrilled by this video-Bear and his friends make even the difficult parts of growing-up a lot of fun! -Tracey Hogan.
