Review Ni Ni's Treehouse - Nursery Rhyme Time / Ni Ni's Treehouse:NiNi's Treehouse, Nursery Rhymes is a creative and educational 45-minute video aimed at the under-fives. Co-produced by GMTV and the Itsy Bitsy Entertainment Company, this, the first NiNi video, is set in magical Oooberryland and features the cuddly, big-eared host and his friends. NiNi sketches most of the 14 nursery rhymes covered, allocating a special book for each. He uses his friends the Treezle Twins as the main characters, causing much fun for the fluffy green duo as they feature in rhymes including "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "This Little Pig Went to Market". Traditional wording is used in all the rhymes: Jack "breaks his crown" rather than falling "all the way down". Nini explains the meaning of outdated words such as "tuffet" and "curds and whey", and there is plenty of hilarity when NiNi teaches the Twins the tongue-twister "Peter Piper". Short, engaging stories complement the rhymes and are provided by NiNi's friends Norman and the Fingerlings, Oupagogo, Horace the Hippo, the Stringy Things and the Drawing Children. There are important messages too. Politeness and consideration for others are emphasised in the interaction between NiNi and the Twins. The importance of each individual and the cruelty of jealousy are looked at respectively by Horace the H ippo and the Drawing Children. Originating from the fun and educational GMTV series, the video is set in a treehouse in magical Oooberryland (where oooberries are bright pink fruit) and features the lovable and creative host NiNi and his friends the Treezle Twins. It is the Twins' birthday and NiNi makes a special birthday box filled with games, presents, food and songs. While decorating the box, NiNi draws imaginary characters, jokes with the Twins and tells short engaging stories. Through the combination of puppets and 2-D and 3-D animation, colourful characters spring to life including Norman and the Fingerlings, Oupagogo, Horace the Hippo , the Stringy Things and the Drawing Children. There is something for every child. Toddlers will be thrilled by Oupagogo, a green puppet with yellow spots, blue hair and a simple vocabulary, and pre-schoolers' attention will be held by Norman's story which is presented in instalments and centres around a birthday dilemma. Nini's Treehouse has some simple but innovative ideas including the excellent Drawing Children, where children's pictures are animated and the story narrated by a child. Equally, youngsters will be intrigued by the masters of disguise-two pieces of string, which can turn into anything from cakes to lions when animated. The video is well thought through with attention to detail. [+]Even the scene changes introduce multi-coloured stars and children's handprints fleetingly-enhancing the magical quality of the video. The cute and cuddly NiNi will quickly find an enthusiastic young audience and youngsters will see something new in the video with each viewing. Review Maisy's Fun In The Sun Beach Bag / Universal Pictures UK:With the Fun in the Sun Beach Bag, Maisy turns her attention to safe summer fun. The lightweight, see-through rucksack is perfect for collecting pebbles, shells and any other vital souvenirs from a day on the beach. However, it's made of plastic and has straps so is not suitable for children under the age of three. The beach bag contains lipscreen, a simple cotton hat and sunglasses-more for fashion than protection-as well as Maisy's video: Fun in the Sun. The nine animated tales on the video each centre around a particular theme, loosely connected by the idea of having Fun in the Sun. The combination of bright colours and simple construction with jolly music and Pingu-style language, captures young imaginations, while Neil Morrissey once again provides the narration, gently guiding young viewers through the activities on screen and emphasising the educational aspects of each story. The Episodes: Beach shows Maisy arriving at the seaside-fully protected against the harmful effects of the sun in her hat, sunglasses and sun cream-to enjoy a day in the sun with her friends. In Hello preschoolers learn the noises that different animals make, while the friends don different headwear in Hats. Maisy gives Charley a birthday present in Umbrella, and Cyril has a slight accident in Oops. Maisy flies her plane and counts from one to 10 in Sky and Cyril catches a cold in Sneezes. Review Action Man - Vol. 1 - The Call To Action / Walt Disney Home Video:Action Man, the Call to Action comprises over an hour of non-stop exertion featuring the square-jawed hero with the over-developed pecs. This well-animated film is great entertainment and, although the storyline and dialogue may not be terribly original, it has everything a "Team Xtreme" fan could wish for: gadgets, extreme sport and non-stop action. There is also a proper baddy with a proper baddy's name, Dr. X, and a strong tendency for good to triumph over evil. The action starts immediately with Action Man, Alex Mann, head-to-head with his best friend and rival, Brandon Caine, racing across the rooftops of Paris. Brandon brings the "buddy" element to the story and acts as the catalyst for adventure when he falls into the clutches of the evil doctor. Frankly, Brandon is not very likeable-even before he's been "adapted" by Dr. X-and it's hard to see why Alex and his team, a rag-tag posse of assorted personalities, bother to try and free him. Fortunately they do, enabling Alex to test the AMP Factor, the recently discovered mental ability that allows him to consider every possibility in a flash and perform impossible escapes. This special feature-length episode is followed by a shorter story, Grey Areas in which Alex learns more about the AMP Factor and encounters a beautiful assassin. [+]The scene is set for further adventures and volume two, Action Man, Storm Front is also available. This video contains some violence, hence the PG classification, but should be suitable for most children aged eight and over. -Helen Baker.

Review Scooby Doo - Vol. 1 [2000] / Warner Home Video:A lot has changed since the original 70s-era gang of Scooby-Doo fans gave way to today's followers of the hipster mystery cartoon series. Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders contains all the familiar elements; even the groovy green Mystery Machine makes a comeback, but it isn't as reliable as it used to be. At the outset of Alien Invaders, it breaks down, leaving the crime-solving crew stranded in a creepy desert town overrun by aliens. From there, the plot unwinds faster than Scooby can down a box of his namesake snacks. A band of swollen-headed purple and green space guys-Zoinks-send the terrified teens scrambling for cover, but it's not long before the quick-witted gang figures out that there's a team of bad guys behind the bug-eyed masks. That's not to say, though, that real-life aliens aren't also roaming the streets, as Shag and Scoob (who hook up in an unprecedented Scooby-Doo romance with a peace sign-wearing babe and her equally hip dog) discover in the course of clearing out of the phoney aliens' hair-raising path. To longtime viewers, the love angle seems unsettling; it steals from the tightness of the mystery team. Still, with so much creepy fun to get caught up in, it's a minor complaint. Scott Innes, the modern-day voice of both Shaggy and Scooby, nails both parts, and Jennifer Love Hewitt fans also will want to tune in-she sings the Scooby theme song. -Tammy La Gorce, Amazon.
