Review Steps - Live At Wembley 2000 / Sony Bmg:

The boys and girls from Steps have shimmied and boogied their way into the hearts of true pop lovers everywhere, and they amply demonstrate just why in their Steps Live at Wembley video, featuring hits from Step One, Steptacular and even some songs that had never been heard or seen before. With just over 80 minutes of footage from their momentous concert, all the favourites are included, with full-energy renditions of "One for Sorrow", "Deeper Shade of Blue", "Last Thing on My Mind", "Better the Devil You Know", "Love's Got a Hold On My Heart", "Summer of Love" and, saving the best for last, "Tragedy". It's all here-the sets, the costumes, the synchronised dancing in an amazing live stage show. Steps are widely acknowledged to be sheer professional performers who've had a series of hugely successful tours and their concert is certainly a spectacle to behold. You have to hand it to them, they really work hard, engaging with the audience and getting them involved. This video of the live show is engrossingly entertaining, atmospheric and has good coverage of all the members of the band, with all five getting the chance to take leads and be at the forefront of the action. The three girls give a great, poignant rendition of "I Know Him So Well" from the musical Chess, harmonising well and obviously relishing the chance to prove the quality of their voices and extend their range. In all there are 19 perfect pop performances, complete with multiple costume changes and those energy packed, polished routines we all love to emulate. Steps indisputably know how to put on a show, and it's a sure bet that even at home, audience participation is impossible to avoid. You won't be able to sit still and for those still catching up with Steps' legendary choreography, it really is an advantage to have those dance steps on hand to practise in your own home. [+]

Review The Love Bug (1969) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:

The Love Bug is a savvy Disney hit from 1969 made a star of a Volkswagen precisely when the car was becoming more popular than ever. Dean Jones and Michele Lee head the cast in a story about a VW bug with a mind of its own. Disney-man Robert Stevenson, director of The Absent-Minded Professor, Mary Poppins, and lots of other Disney live-action hits, makes the slapstick work perfectly and keeps the laughs coming. Buddy Hackett is very funny in a supporting role. -Tom Keogh.

Review Thunderbirds 6: The Movie [1968] / MGM Entertainment:

Thunderbird 6 was the second feature spin-off from the hit Gerry Anderson puppet-animation TV series Thunderbirds, and revolved around a new addition to the line-up of International Rescue's five emergency craft. The plot sees Lady Penelope, Alan, Tin-Tin and Parker as the only passengers on the maiden, round-the-world flight of a futuristic airship, which is hijacked in a bid to capture Thunderbirds 1 and 2. From the moment Alan arrives on a Bond-style jetpack, the film veers away from the TV show into espionage adventure territory, and while the only people International Rescue rescue are their own members, they kill a fair number of baddies. The global tour means there are more locations than ever, and though the story takes a long time developing, the Die Hard-on-an-airship finale delivers the most explosive set piece of Gerry Anderson's career. As for Thunderbird 6, opinion remains divided as to whether it's an ingenious twist or a disappointing gimmick, but the movie's blend of model and live-action footage results in two superbly staged stunt sequences. Predecessor Thunderbirds Are Go (1968) is also available, and the Andersons would make one further feature film, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969). On the DVD: The anamorphically enhanced 2. 35:1 ratio image is sharp, full of detail and boasting well-saturated colours, only the briefest moments of damage and some graininess revealing the age of the print. The film was shot in ultra-wide Techniscope, and there are moments were it is very obvious that parts of the original 2. 74:1 picture have been cropped at the sides. [+]
The mono sound is powerful with no hint of distortion. Extras are the original trailer, galleries of behind the scenes photos and promotional artwork, though the highlight is the highly informative commentary by Sylvia Anderson and director David Lane where they note how they made this film and worked on Captain Scarlet simultaneously. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Rugrats - Artsy Antics [2001] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

The Rugrats gang are back and this time they explore their more creative side in the five episodes on this video. Angelica, self-proclaimed leader of the group and a neurotic three year old, tries hard to interest Tommy and his baby friends in artistic activities. Painting, music, ballets-Angelica excels in all, or so she thinks. Fortunately, the babies' good nature and natural gift for entertainment saves the day. Enjoy watching Chuckie and the babies pushed around by Angelica, becoming unlikely post-modern painting geniuses. Relish the vision of the Rugrats left alone in an Art Museum and the inevitable mayhem they provoke. Find out how hyperactive Angelica manages a dance performance to impress her more gifted friend Susie-with the support of twins Lil and Phil, Tommy Pickles and the other babies. Experience the rise and fall of a rock band-baby style. Largely thanks to Nickelodeon, the Rugrats are becoming an integral part of the lives of today's children. Love them or hate them, you just can't ignore them. [+]
Children will love these highly entertaining five mini-adventures. Parents may regret the lack of educational content, especially in a video centred on a more cultured art theme. Nevertheless, the sharp and oh-so real personality traits given to the various characters-from the children mimicking their parents to the grown-ups trying to keep on top of things-deliver a cocktail of good gags and funny situations to be enjoyed. in moderation. -Victoria MacKenzie.

Review The Hoobs - Funny Faces / Uca Catalogue:

The Hoobs continue their quest for knowledge in these two Hoobygalooby episodes from the Channel 4 series for pre-schoolers. Travelling the universe, Iver, Tula and Groove encourage young children to explore the world with them. Each episode begins with a question that the Hoobs seek to answer, generally enlisting the help of the Tiddlypeeps along the way, and follows them as they report their findings to Hubba Hubba Hoob back home. The activities of the Hoobs in the Hoobmobile are interspersed with animated film footage and clips of real children, giving plenty of scope to explore each subject in more depth and supplying additional interest. Each programme provides a springboard for further discussion and offers fun ideas for activities at home or in the nursery, from making masks to drawing mermaids. At the end of each episode the Hoob News provides a recap of the journey-reinforcing the ideas and issues that have been raised along the way. Accompanied by cheerful music and song, mainly provided by the Motorettes-colourful, musical creatures that work inside the engine in the Hoobmobile-the Hoobs stimulate and engage young imaginations with a lively, fun, mix of education and entertainment. This is yet another success for the Jim Henson Company. - Helen Baker.

Review Swiss Family Robinson [1960] / Walt Disney Home Video:

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colourful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family setting off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multi-level tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck it's pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film: even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and non-lethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully shot film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire co-stars as the proper, worry-prone mother. [+]

Review Sesame Street - 1,2,3 Count With Me / Imagine That [1998] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from one to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go", an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One" and "Rap Song #11". Favourite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and two-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age five will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from one bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! If you're looking for a fun video that teaches counting skills, here it is. -Tami Horiuchi.

Review EMI / Robbie Williams - The Robbie Williams Show Release date: 2003-03-24
Run time: 110 min.
RRP: £15.99
Price: £1.89

Review Robbie Williams - The Robbie Williams Show / EMI:

The Robbie Williams Show is the first of many products which EMI hope will recompense them for their huge investment in Robbie. Stylised as a kitschy 1960s light entertainment special, and recorded on one of the James Bond stages at Pinewood Studios, the show opens in a spectacular manner with 80 dancers perched behind the star on a 60 ft scaffolding set. Produced as a "live" and intimate TV special to promote the album Escapology, the show also provides further evidence of the star's quest to become an all-round entertainer. Between the songs, Williams teases and cajoles the audience with his usual patter of innuendo and self-parody. He also candidly discusses the multi-million pound record deal, his separation from long-time songwriting collaborator Guy Chambers, and his 12-month break from performing live. The show is faultless, and achieves its primary objective of showcasing the new album through a sensible mix of familiar favourites and fresh material. The dancers, musicians and stage set are also excellent, and provide further evidence of how Robbie Williams Inc. has become a mammoth enterprise with the fortunes of many riding on his success. However, his continued on and off-stage lampooning of his fame and fortune becomes immensely irritating after a while: change this record Robbie, before it wears you and your fans out. On the DVD: The Robbie Williams Show DVD reproduces the garish colours of the stage set and lighting, and the soundtrack (available in ordinary stereo, and 5. [+]
1 Surround) provides added panache to this light-entertainment spectacular. As well as the 23-minute backstage footage, comprising the standard Robbie-walking-around-with-no-shirt-on material, other extras include Hamish Brown's photos of the show, alternative versions of three of the songs, and footage rescued from the cutting-room floor of Robbie performing "Revolution". Extra footage can also be accessed following the successful completion of the "Follow the Lights" game. -John Galilee.
