Maisy, the epony-mouse from Lucy Cousins' hugely popular books, has been brought to the small screen in a series of beautifully produced animated tales now collected together on video. Each episode focuses on a central theme such as "Bedtime" or "Birthday", and features Maisy's band of friends: Tallulah the effervescent chick, Eddie the elephant, Cyril the Squirrel, and the stomach-obsessed crocodile Charley. The animation reproduces the bright, block colours of the books, but adds a new dimension of playful characterisation and sound effects. The characters' voices are very much in the Teletubbies and Pingu mode, offering few discernible words but perfectly evoking the individual characters and appealing to very young children. Neil Morrissey's voice-over offers a gentle, questioning cue for Maisy and her friends' activities, and further brings out the stories' educational emphasis. The Maisy videos combine simple presentation with charming characterisation to great effect and each tale is constructed with an underlying intelligence and humour that repays repeat viewings. For those in occasional need of a Teletubby-free zone, these are the perfect videos for pre-school children. Starting with Maisy's own birthday party, the episodes in Birthday and Other Stories focus on many different types of fun and games, including "Parade", "Balloons" and "Playground". Maisy and her friends visit the fair, make lemonade, don costumes for Tallulah's fancy-dress party and even help distract Cyril from his discomfort when eating too many cakes leads to a tummy-ache. A pirate treasure hunt and playhouse tea-party ensure the celebrations are complete. [+]

Review The Adventures Of Huck Finn (Disney) [1994] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Huckleberry Finn's age has been scaled down in this 1993 Disney film in order to accommodate star Elijah Wood's young years at the time. But that is not the only concession Mark Twain's great American novel must make to Disney revisionism. Wood's Huck, as adapted for the screen by writer-director Stephen Sommers, is all rascal and only nominally a philosopher, which takes a lot of the soul out of Twain's extraordinary story about Huck's enlightenment while travelling with the slave Jim (Courtney B. Vance) along the Mississippi river. Big chunks of the journey are also minimised in significance, and not just for the sake of storytelling economy. Jason Robards Jr and Robbie Coltrane brighten things up, but overall this is an unnecessarily simplified version of a literary classic. -Tom Keogh.

The fab four are put through their pop paces in Tweenies-Music is Pop-a-rooney. Bella, Jake, Milo and Fizz perform a selection of favourite songs including their hit singles "No. 1", "Lollipop" and "Best Friends Forever" in front of an appreciative young audience in this Top of the Pops special. Even Max gets in on the act, reminiscing about the good old days when the likes of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple played "proper music with tunes". The original music videos for the three singles are included as bonus footage, which adds a new dimension but it may have been better value if these songs had not been among the selection already performed in the studio, given that the video's total running time is only 34 minutes. However, young fans may appreciate the chance to learn the lyrics afforded by the repetition and are likely to play them over and over again anyway!-Helen Baker.
