Bear in the Big Blue House, Happy and Healthy is a cheerful and lively 48-minute video packed with songs, stories and information for two to seven year olds. Produced by The Jim Henson Company, this two-episode video features Disney Channel's favourite seven foot Bear and his colourful muppet friends. The first episode "The Big Blue House Call" attempts to tackle children's fear of the doctor. When Doc Hogg pays a visit, Bear explains to his friends the importance of check-ups and with a song he coaxes Ojo the frightened bear cub from under the bedclothes for his vaccination. The second show "Picture of Health" emphasises that rest is as important to good health as a balanced diet and exercise. Bear successfully advises exhausted mouse Tutter that he will feel stronger and refreshed if he takes a short sleep. Youngsters will quickly warm to Bear who is friendly, confident, curious and cuddly. He encourages a participatory mood with his young audience by moving very close to the camera and talking directly to them. He even claims he can smell his healthy young viewers! Songs play an important part in setting the pace. Each episode starts with the cast belting out "Welcome to the Blue House" and finishes with the striking image of Bear on the balcony and the moon character Luna singing a harmonious duet. [+]

For the non-Australians out there, the Wiggles are a quartet of male songbirds reminiscent of the Monkees, but aimed at the Barney-watching set. The Down Under foursome sings about mashed bananas and hot potatoes, dances with the energy of fitness instructors and makes mild attempts at being educational. (Three of the four met while studying early childhood education. ) Their stab at multiculturalism results in the Jewish song "Havenu Shalom Alachem". Joining them are a big green dinosaur named Dorothy (seem familiar?), Henry the giant purple octopus, Wags the Dog and a man in a pirate suit called Captain Feathersword. The songs are catchy, the dancing vigorous, and the outfits colourful approximations of the uniforms worn by the original crew of the USS Enterprise. A couple of the haircuts look like they might have been acquired on the spaceship as well. The 15-song video runs 33 minutes long and claims to be appropriate for ages 1-8, but will most likely appeal to children under 5. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Traditionalists were of course scandalised enough when the stop-motion animated Noddy TV series featured regional accents and (gasp) positive black characters. God only knows what they'll make of this. Try to keep up: what you have here is an Anglo-American co-production in which stories from the stop-motion series are sandwiched between frantic scenarios featuring live-action children and adult characters and puppets-a kind of Sesame Street in total overdrive. This, of course, seems hopelessly incongruous to everyone except the show's intended audience, which simply takes the whole thing in its stride. Individually, the two elements are commendable anyway; the first live-action episode-involving a parrot and an unstoppable vacuum cleaner-is a particularly fine piece of slapstick, while the original stop-motion stories are as gently rewarding as ever. This DVD is guaranteed to meet with approval from the jingly-hatted one's many young fans. -Roger Thomas.
