Review Sesame Street - 1,2,3 Count With Me / Imagine That [1998] / Walt Disney Home Video:Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from one to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go", an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One" and "Rap Song #11". Favourite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and two-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age five will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from one bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! Review Honey, I Shrunk The Kids [1989] / Walt Disney Home Video:A deft balance between special effects, comedy and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbour kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended) and entertaining outing. -Keith Simanton.

Review Tweenies - Songs And Surprises [1999] / 2 Entertain Video:Bella, Fizz, Milo and Jake bounce back onto the screen in Tweenies Songs & Surprises, combining the theme of surprise with the high-energy mix of music, role-play and stories that will be familiar to those who know and love the programmes on the BBC. In keeping with the "surprise" motif, there are plenty of the sorts of simple practical jokes that young children love, from whoopee cushions to jack-in-the-boxes, and in a quieter moment Max reads a story about a surprise birthday party, Happy Birthday Amelia. There are also numerous ideas for dressing-up and creative play and ample opportunity for audience participation: at one point the Tweenies grab their Teddy bears and act out "Teddy Bears' Picnic", at another they dress-up as pirates-even Doodles dons an eye patch-and follow a treasure map that Judy has made. Review Baby Bach / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Designed for infants and toddlers (one to 36 months), Baby Bach is a nicely produced video that features familiar toys and colourful objects, moving to the complex beautiful music of Johann Sebastian Bach. According to the video producers, "Bach's music has shown to enhance creativity, improve academic achievement, reduce anxiety and heighten mental awareness". Any parent will embrace this theory. Not only did this video completely captivate a 22-month-old for its entire 30-minute run-time but it's easy on the parents, too. The images are lively, clean and sharp and producers The Baby Einstein Company have a firm handle on what interests babies and toddlers. The extraneous segments with two pretty little blonde girls is silly but forgivable. Given that most children elect to watch a video repeatedly, this is one that parents won't mind in the slightest. Review The Story of Robin Hood:A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story of Robin Hood is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend-the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one. ) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale.
