Review Teletubbies - Dance With The Teletubbies / 2 Entertain Video:The British countryside has seen few raves like this one-our favourite Teletubbies are shown dancing through Teletubby Land with a few of their friends and, of course, their many rabbits. The "Stepping and Standing Dance" leads things off, followed by the "Walking Dance", "Running Away Dance", "Splashing Dance", and so forth (thankfully, we're spared from "Riverdance"). Of course, all this dancing-and even some clips of real children performing a few jigs-can wear a little thin on the patience of any child or parent. While younger children may want to perform some of the moves themselves (the "Tip Toe Dance" looks semi-appealing), everyone else risks becoming bored. The Teletubbies work best when, just like the typical preschooler, they all act differently, performing unique tasks (check out the effective Here Come the Teletubbies). On this video, they're all line dancing. There is some genuine weirdness for more mature Tubby aficionados: a vacuum cleaner starts dancing and a computer-animated bear does a convincing Grateful Dead-inspired number. Review Tweenies - Doodles' New Friend [1999] / 2 Entertain Video:The latest member of the Tweenies bounds onto the screen in Doodles' New Friend. Izzles, the boisterous puppy, makes her debut appearance in this fab-a-rooney video for pre-schoolers. Alongside the familiar activities, songs and story-telling, Izzles brings a fresh element to the group. Each character reacts to the new arrival in a different way, from Jake, who's scared by the rumbustious pup, to Doodles who is seriously put out by the arrival of another dog in the house. In the end though it's Doodles himself, the Jimmy Durante of the canine world, who decides that it's time for a dog-to-dog talk and takes the young newcomer in hand. Doodles' New Friend is another entertaining and educational video from the BBC and cannot fail to appeal to the ever-growing army of Tweenies fans. -Helen Baker Running time: 68 minutes approximately.

Review Bob The Builder - A Christmas To Remember [1999] / Hit Entertainment:Bob the Builder's first full-length adventure, A Christmas to Remember, is a festive extravaganza boasting an all-star cast, including Elton John and Noddy Holder. Bob's twin brother Tom, a zoologist, (voiced by Stephen Tompkinson) is coming home from the Artic for the festivities and Bob's planning the perfect Christmas. But there are so many things to do first and Bob will have to work his little yellow hardhat off if he's to get everything done in time: there's the tree to fetch, the lights to put up in the town square, not to mention the stage to build for Lennie and the Lazers' free concert on Christmas Eve. Fortunately, Bob has all his usual friends to help as well as an extra pair of hands in the form of the loveable Banger (Noddy Holder), roadie to the band-unfortunately, he also has Spud-but when news comes that Tom has been unavoidably delayed, it begins to look as though Bob won't be having a perfect Christmas after all. Meanwhile all is not well within the band: Lennie (Chris Evans) is losing his voice and John (Elton John) is having trouble finishing his new song. Luckily, Roley is on hand to help the creative process along and even suggests a jazzier stage name when it seems that John will have to sing in Lennie's place at the gig. A Christmas to Remember is priceless festive entertainment for adults and children alike: Noddy Holder, whose stage characteristics are perfectly transferred to his diminutive screen persona, complete with Doc Martens and a stovepipe hat, puts in a bravura performance as Banger-while Elton John underplays beautifully right up to, but certainly not including, the rousing grand finale. With this successful transfer to feature length adventures, it seems that no job's too big for this particular builder. [+]-Helen Baker Running time: 63 minutes approximately.

Review Maisy - Colours And Counting / Universal Pictures UK:Maisy, the epony-mouse from Lucy Cousins' hugely popular books, has been brought to the small screen in a series of beautifully produced animated tales now collected together on video. Each episode focuses on a central theme such as "Bedtime" or "Birthday", and features Maisy's band of friends: Tallulah the effervescent chick, Eddie the elephant, Cyril the Squirrel, and the stomach-obsessed crocodile Charley. The animation reproduces the bright, block colours of the books, but adds a new dimension of playful characterisation and sound effects. The characters' voices are very much in the Teletubbies and Pingu mode, offering few discernible words but perfectly evoking the individual characters and appealing to very young children. Neil Morrissey's voice-over offers a gentle, questioning cue for Maisy and her friends' activities, and further brings out the stories' educational emphasis. The Maisy videos combine simple presentation with charming characterisation to great effect and each tale is constructed with an underlying intelligence and humour that repays repeat viewings. For those in occasional need of a Teletubby-free zone, these are the perfect videos for pre-school children. In Colours & Counting Maisy picks up all her friends in her bus (although Eddie is a tight squeeze!), plays hide and seek with Charly, and organizes an egg hunt for everyone. In "Clouds" she goes ballooning, while at the circus Cyril spin plates, Tallulah walks the tightrope, Eddie trampolines and Maisy does a turn on the trapeze. The emphasis on numbers and colours is imaginatively applied throughout, particularly when Eddie helps Maisy paint her shed in technicolour! -Steve Napleton.
