Review Casino Royale - (Previously Casino Royale - The Lost TV Classic) (1954) / Ilc Prime:John Huston was only one of five directors on Casino Royale, the expensive, all-star 1967 spoof of Ian Fleming's 007 lore. David Niven is the aging Sir James Bond, called out of retirement to take on the organised threat of SMERSH and pass on the secret-agent mantle to his idiot son (Woody Allen). The amazing cast (Orson Welles, Peter Sellers, Deborah Kerr and others) is wonderful to look at, but the film is not as funny as it should be, and the romping even starts to look mannered after a while. The musical score by Burt Bacharach, however, is a keeper. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review All Quiet on the Western Front [1930] / Paramount Home Entertainment:This 1930 film, No 54 on the AFI's Top 100 list, still holds up as a surprisingly forceful and honest antiwar drama. Indeed, the modern sensibility is almost as startling as the sometime stagy acting of Lew Ayres, which can be excused by the fact that, three years after the introduction of sound, actors were still applying stage techniques to talking pictures. Ayres plays a German college student during World War I, who is brainwashed into enlisting in the Army (along with the rest of his class) by a zealously inspirational college professor. Once in uniform and on the front lines, however, he quickly discovers that the glory of the Fatherland is of little concern to a soldier dodging bullets and explosions, whose comrades are dying in his arms. As powerful in its way as Platoon almost 60 years later, All Quiet on the Western Front remains a classic tale of young soldiers' confrontations with the possibility of imminent and arbitrary death. Director Lewis Milestone shows a surprising range of techniques in this film from the formative years of moviemaking with sound. -Marshall Fine.

Review Highlander - Endgame [2000] / Cinema Club:Never has a franchise been more surprisingly prolific or brain-bogglingly convoluted than Highlander. In case you were wondering why, Endgame will give you an answer of sorts. It's always great to see folks hacking away at each other with swords, especially when they are imaginatively choreographed action-actors like Adrian Paul and Christopher Lambert. But it's all complicated by the fact that they shouldn't be together at all. Ever since the first film, no writer has been able (or bothered) to follow the continuity it established. The second film (The Quickening) is considered forgettably apocryphal, with only the third (The Sorcerer) making some sort of vague chronological sense. Then the TV series began in 1992 (starring Paul) and created its own rules and timeline. Skip over a further TV spin-off and even an animated series, and we now have Endgame, which flips between present-day New York, 16th-century Scotland and various times in-between, with none of it even attempting to tie-in with anything that has gone before. But if you can get past its basic inconsistencies, it's fun to see an aging Lambert in a kilt, still wielding that sword. The new baddies are pretty cool too, though, more importantly, the film proves conclusively that the original legend "There can be only one" was a complete lie. [+]

Review Cyborg / Bloodsport [1989] / Warner Home Video:A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in what may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story. The Muscles from Brussels plays Frank Dux, the first Westerner ever to win the extreme "whupfest" known as the Kumatai (a long-running, no-holds-barred fighting tournament in Hong Kong). While a bit deficient in the script department (to say the least), this undeniably exciting flick succeeds by letting Van Damme play to his strengths: namely, minimal acting and a lot of impossibly acrobatic splits while kicking people in the head. Bloodsport is a guilty-pleasure testosterone blast of the highest order, with a memorable villain (the massive Bolo Yeung from Enter the Dragon) and a multitude of well-choreographed fight scenes. An embarrassed-looking Forest Whitaker cameos as a hapless (and non-kickboxing) cop. -Andrew Wright A well-oiled Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his starring debut in Bloodsport, which may be one of the few kickboxing films to be based on a true story.
