Review Silverado [1985] / Uca Catalogue:Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone-sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowboys-Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner-converge on a little Western burg called Silverado. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. -Robert Horton, Amazon. com.

Review An Actor's Revenge [1962] / Connoisseur Video:If ever there was a triumph of bricks without straw, this is it. An Actor's Revenge is based on a weary old melodrama that had already been twice filmed before Kon Ichikawa got to it. The action is set in 1836. A Kabuki star famed for his female roles sets out to avenge himself on three rich merchants who drove his parents to suicide, aided by an audacious bandit. In the 1935 film version both roles were taken by matinee idol Kazuo Hasegawa. In this, Ichikawa's 1963 remake, his outrageous ploy was to cast the same actor (now well into his 50s, paunchy and jowly) in the same double role-and then throw at him a whole heap of extravagant visual and stylistic tricks: split screen, distorted colour, strip-cartoon thought-bubbles and more. Rather than trying to rationalise the corny plot Ichikawa plays it at full throttle, revelling in its wild implausibilities and sexual ambiguity: at one point Hasegawa as the bandit watches himself as the actor, in drag, making falsetto advances to a woman. The photography, art direction and jazz-tinged music score all contribute to the mood of shameless bravura. An Actor's Revenge is a film that has to be seen to be disbelieved. -Philip Kemp.

Review Dukes Of Hazzard - Vol. 1 - Daisy Duke Collection / Dukes of Hazzard:From the golden age of early-evening weekend telly The Dukes of Hazzard works as a reminder of a simpler time. An era when having a sense of morals meant leaping into a souped-up orange racer with the doors welded shut and having endless car chases with the crooked law, and when problems were solved with a good-natured fistfight at your local watering hole. It also maintains the classic good/bad divide of character types-the baddies were bumbling fools and the good guys and gal were clean-cut and clean-thinking but not so sanitised that they lost their individuality or their cool. The original series ran from 1979-1985 and during that time cousins Luke, Bo and Daisy Duke (all under the watchful eye of the stern-but-decent Uncle Jesse) tussled with the dishonest duo of Boss Hogg and Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane. Each week, Hogg and Coltrane came up with an illegal moneymaking scheme and the Dukes did their best to scupper their plans, "battling the system like two modern-day Robin Hoods". Cue Boss Hogg blubbling like an overgrown baby, and the ever-popular Daisy Duke sending teenage boys into fits of confusion. The plots didn't vary hugely from episode to episode, but The Dukes of Hazzard-just like the enduring A-Team-was not about thought provoking television. Rather it offered familiarity, friendship and a sense of knowing your place in the world-usually in front of the TV on a Saturday evening. -Ian Watson.

Review The Glimmer Man [1996] / Warner Home Video:Steven Seagal needed a new approach to his standard head-busting heroics, so he teamed up with Keenen Ivory Wayans for this routine 1996 action flick. This time stone-faced Steve plays Los Angeles homicide detective Jack Cole, newly transplanted from New York and teamed up with Jim Campbell (Wayans). They're assigned to track down "The Family Man," a serial killer who earned his nickname by crucifying entire families and leaving religious graffiti as his calling card. The case heats up when the latest victim turns out to be Cole's ex-wife, and Cole is considered a primary suspect. That makes Seagal get really mad-you don't want to get Seagal too upset, y'know-but he still has time to quote Buddhist wisdom and crack wise with Wayans, who plays it relatively straight as the practical half of this partnership. Glimmer Man is typical Seagal stuff all the way, with obligatory fight scenes every 10 minutes or so, but Seagal fans will enjoy it and Brian Cox makes a suitably hissable villain. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Out of Africa [1986] / 4 Front Video:Winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Out of Africa seems to have slipped more readily from public memory than other comparably lauded films. Yet Sidney Pollack's panoramic treatment of Karen Blixen's novel has retained its atmosphere and slow-burning emotion, and deserves reassessment. Meryl Streep is in her possibly most involving starring role as Baroness Karen Blixen, Danish free spirit whose ill-fated venture at the beginning of World War One to run a coffee plantation in Kenya is overlaid by her intimate yet distant relationship with adventurer and idealist Denys Finch Hatton, unselfconsciously portrayed by Robert Redford. Klaus Maria Brandauer puts in a rare and convincing English-language appearance as the amoral but charming womaniser Baron Bror Blixen. The film is tellingly held together by Kurt Luedke's finely honed screenplay, and John Barry's sumptuously expressive score. On the DVD: The anamorphic 1. 85:1 widescreen format reproduces superbly, as does the 4. 1 discrete audio. 18 access points are provided, with printed and aural subtitles in English only. Pollack's feature commentary is amusing enough on a single run-through, but an on-location documentary would have been preferable. [+]
Production notes and biographies are very adequate, though the theatrical trailer reproduction is notably inferior. No matter, this is a major film, well worth the transfer to DVD. -Richard Whitehouse.
