Review Black Hawk Down [2002]:Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U. S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U. S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but Black Hawk Down makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Robocop 2 [1990] / 4 Front Video:RoboCop 2 isn't just the title of the first sequel to RoboCop but refers, in a plot prefiguring Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), to a second, more powerful cyborg introduced as an adversary to the tin-can man played to perfection by Peter Weller. Generally dismissed by most fans, here director Irvin Kershner does much the same job as he did with the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), which is to make a darker and in some ways more involving follow-up. Nancy Allen returns from the original as RoboCop's policewoman sidekick and Kershner sticks to the jet-black satire and ruthless comic-book morality of the original, making this a rarity for Hollywood: a multi-million-dollar franchise movie anti-capitalist assault on the "greed is good" mentality of the Regan era. There's even a hilariously prescient dig at the way the studio would eventually dumb the series down into family-friendly fodder, a process that began with the immediate sequel, RoboCop 3 (1993). Action is to the fore and among the spectacular set-pieces and furious carnage RoboCop 2 offers a last stand before digital effects took over for some excellent stop-motion animation for RoboCop's psychotic new foe. On the DVD: this is a perfunctory release with nothing in the way of extras bar the original trailer presented cropped to 4:3. Fortunately the 1. 77:1 picture on the main feature is excellent, with minimal grain, strong colours and plenty of detail. The sound, though four-channel Dolby Prologic rather than Dolby Digital, is likewise excellent, with every word clear and gunshots, explosions and pulsating score combining to full cacophonic blockbuster effect. The disc also contains dubbed versions in Italian, French and Spanish, as well as a vast selection of subtitles. [+]

Review Alaska [1996] / Warner Home Video:Director Fraser Heston captures the danger and beauty of Alaska in this adventurous family film about two kids who embark on a very personal rescue mission. Former 747 pilot Jake Barnes (Dirk Benedict) moved away from a fast-paced Chicago lifestyle with his two children, Jessie and Sean, after the death of his wife. While daughter Jessie thoroughly enjoys and excels in her new surroundings, son Sean's moodiness and homesickness escalates. One stormy night Jake's small plane crashes during an emergency flight, leaving him stuck on a treacherous cliff with a broken leg and no radio. The local search and rescue team soon gives up, prompting Sean and Jessie to kayak, hike, canoe, and rappel their way over many lush and snowy miles to save their dad. Younger kids will enjoy the antics of Cubby, the baby polar bear who befriends the youthful trekkers and eventually leads them to their father. They'll also enjoy the good-natured sibling rivalry between the tough but tender-hearted Jessie (Thora Birch of Now and Then) and Sean (Vincent Kartheiser of The Indian in the Cupboard) and a chance to hiss at the two evil poachers (including the director's father, Charlton Heston). Parents, on the other hand, may feel compelled to explain etiquette around wild animals, the dangers of hypothermia, and how to pack for a long hike. But the scenic Cook's tour of Alaska and British Columbia makes some of these otherwise corny elements tolerable to grown-ups. -Liane Thomas.

Review Falling Down [1992] / Warner Home Video:Falling Down, about a downsized engineer (Michael Douglas) who goes ballistic, triggered a media avalanche of stories in the USA about middle-class white rage when it was released in 1993. In fact, it's nothing more than a manipulative, violent melodrama about one geek's meltdown. Douglas, complete with pocket protector, nerd glasses, crewcut and short-sleeved white shirt, gets stuck in traffic one day near downtown LA and proceeds to just walk away from his car-and then lose it emotionally. Everyone he encounters rubs him the wrong way-and a fine lot of stereotypes they are, from threatening ghetto punks to rude convenience store owners to a creepy white supremacist-and he reacts violently in every case. As he walks across LA (now there's a concept), cutting a bloody swath, he's being tracked by a cop on the verge of retirement (Robert Duvall). He also spends time on the phone with his frightened ex-wife (Barbara Hershey). Though Douglas and Duvall give stellar performances, they can't disguise the fact that, as usual, this is another film from director Joel Schumacher that is about surface and sensation, rather than actual substance. -Marshall Fine This film, about a downsized engineer (Michael Douglas) who goes ballistic, triggered a media avalanche of stories about middle-class white rage when it was released in 1993. Review The Matrix [1999] / Warner Home Video:By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the co-directing Wachowski brothers-Andy and Larry-annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne-who both turn in fine performances-much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Carrie-Anne Moss, whose Trinity flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semi-psychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise. -Jeremy StoreyIn the Box Set: That this Collector's Edition should appear less than a year after The Matrix's first DVD release indicates the degree to which the film has become an instant classic and set the initial benchmark for DVD quality and extra features. The chunky black box (about the size of the yellow pages) houses a slide-out tray containing the DVD, eight original lobby cards, an original one-sheet movie poster, six black and white photographs and a movie image card with the corresponding 35mm film frame attached. As with all such sets the whole is rapidly diminished by removing its parts, presenting the dilemma of whether to mount the poster and pictures, or leave them pristine but unseen in their original state. The DVD included is the same version available individually, including extensive behind-the-scenes features on the film's special effects. Contrary to the advertised contents, however, the disc does not contain the audio commentaries by Carrie-Anne Moss, editor Zach Staenberg and visual effects supervisor John Gaeta, or the music-only audio track with commentary by composer Don Davis (all of which are currently only available on the American version). Review Ice Cold In Alex / The Colditz Story [1958] / Warner Home Video:During the Second World War the Germans put many of the Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) who had proved consistent escapees together in a maximum security fortress, the very name of which became a legend. Based on the book by Colditz escapee Major Pat Reid, The Colditz Story (1957) documents the further, sometimes successful, escape attempts of these extraordinarily brave, resourceful and indomitable men. Starring John Mills, Eric Portman, Bryan Forbes and Anton Diffring, and co-written and directed by Guy Hamilton, who later made The Battle of Britain (1969), this is a sober, even-handed account, that is gripping and informative, yet not without humour. Sterling performances from the cast of stalwart actors adds up to a British cinema classic. Such is the fascination of Colditz that in 1972-3 the BBC made a very successful drama series staring Jack Hedley, Bernard Hempton, Robert Wagner and David McCallum, while in 2000 Channel 4 offered a superb three-part documentary, Escape from Colditz. In contrast to the semi-documentary feel of The Colditz Story David Lean's classic The Bridge on the River Kwai, from the same year, is an epic and powerful account of POW life in barbaric Japanese prison camps. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review For Your Eyes Only [1981] / MGM Entertainment:After the lavish, effects-heavy splash of Moonraker, the twelfth Bond film and the seventh with Roger Moore concentrates more on core car-chase-and-crumpet values, evoking an almost retro feel that harks back to the first pressings of the Bond vintage in the 1960s. Starting to look a little wrinkly around the edges by this point, Roger Moore toughens his usually smarmy act up here with a gratuitous bit of killing, casually kicking a baddie and his car over a precipice, reviving memories of the ruthless streak with which Sean Connery made his name. Good old-fashioned Cold War politics lie at the heart of the plot, concerning a weapons system hijacked in the Mediterranean Bond must rescue. He's assisted by the exquisite Carole Bouquet, the only actress in history who can claim to have been both a 'Bond girl' and the star of a Luis Buñuel movie (That Obscure Object of Desire). Sadly, this is the first film to lack Bernard Lee's spymaster M, the actor having died beforehand, although British comedienne Janet Brown is on hand for an amusing Margaret Thatcher impersonation. -Leslie FelperinOn the DVD: The first audio commentary here is another one of those edited selections of interviews with sundry cast and crew members, tied together by an over-earnest host. Producer Michael G Wilson and others provide a somewhat more illuminating second commentary track. Once again the best extra feature is the "making of" documentary, which gives an almost scene-by-scene breakdown of the movie. The animated storyboard sequences will appeal to filmmaking aficionados. Avoid, if at all possible, the Sheena Easton video of arguably the most forgettable Bond song of all time (both song and score were perpetrated by series newcomer Bill Conti, not the estimable John Barry).
