Review Judge Dredd [1995] / Pathe Distribution:

Judge Dredd is one of those movies that doesn't have a brain of its own, so it can only rip off a lot of ingredients from other, better movies. It's a mishmash of Blade Runner, Total Recall, and The Road Warrior, with a dash of Star Wars tossed in for good measure. As if that weren't enough, it's got Sylvester Stallone, who seems to be the only one in the movie who's in on the game and knows it's all a sci-fi scam. Like The Fifth Element a few years later, Judge Dredd depicts a futuristic megalopolis packed with crowded vertical overgrowth and rampant commerce, where anarchy reigns supreme. Violent "block wars" are fought by lawless citizens with machine guns, and Judge Dredd (Stallone) is one of the city's heavily armed policemen, given free rein to judge and execute the perpetrators of violence. But Dredd himself is subjected to judgement and swift justice when his own gun is identified in the murder of a prominent TV reporter, forcing him to do whatever he can to clear his name. Diane Lane plays his partner in crime-fighting and romance, and Rob Schneider provides juvenile comic relief as Dredd's streetwise sidekick. Impressive special effects are on vivid display, and the movie's fun for what it's worth. Review The Avengers - Parallel Lines Collection - Volume 1 Of 6 [1964] / Contender Entertainment Group:

With 136 surviving episodes (1962-8), The Avengers is the most successful British action-adventure series ever. Developed from Police Surgeon (1960), itself an ancestor of The Fugitive (1963-6), Patrick MacNee was the debonair secret agent John Steed. He shared his increasingly fantastical missions with three lady Avengers, Cathy Gale, (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) and Tara King (Linda Thorson). The idea behind the six Parallel Lines videos is to present one episode with each heroine in thematically similar storylines. The 1964 Cathy Gale "The Charmers" is a black and white tale of doppelganger double-agents, with a guest appearance by Warren Mitchell. 1967's Emma Peel adventure, "The Correct Way to Kill", is a colour remake of "The Charmers" (parts of the script are identical), produced with a little more money, style and humour. Tara King's "Split" (1968) revolves around an "impossible" murder, seemingly committed by an enemy Steed himself killed many years ago, and is distinguished by the appearance of Nigel Davenport. These are good, not great Avengers episodes, offering the serious fan the opportunity to trace the development of the show's style. However, casual fans might be better off with the more diverse volumes of the M. Appeal Collection or even splashing-out on the splendid The Avengers Science-Fiction and Fantasy Collection box set. Review The Toxic Avenger [1986] / Troma Inc:

The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. - Kim Newman.

"They could fuck the human race out of existence!" warns Michael Madsen in this inevitable-and inevitably contrived-sequel to 1995's surprise sci-fi hit. He's referring to a celebrated astronaut (Justin Lazard) infected with alien DNA from his history-making Mars landing, and the half-alien Eve (Natasha Henstridge), who was created from alien-human embryo splicing by biochemist Dr Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) in an effort to discover the alien species' vulnerabilities on Earth. While the astronaut sows his gruesomely wild oats with doomed women (resulting in a bevy of creepy kids in alien cocoons), Eve goes into heat until she and the astronaut can consummate their procreative lust. Sex and death are served up like money-shots in a porno flick, with an emphasis on gory flesh-regeneration, explosive pregnancies and slimy-tentacled intercourse. All of which makes this is the kind of derivative schlock that only a true fan could love, but it's boosted to a tolerable level of entertainment by the returning cast (Madsen, Henstridge and Helgenberger) from the previous film. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review Little Big Man:

In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel Little Big Man, Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Giving a bravura performance, Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in this picaresque fable of the Old West. Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, making a strong statement about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonising. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam and Richard Mulligan, but this show is all Hoffman's. -Marshall Fine.
